Institution Feedback

  • Starter uses humour very nicely but a lot more could have been made of it. Did the class learn those brands?
  • Nice background detail - Presesntation shared around well and channels/ brands communicated well.
  • MTV awards point great - but where is the word synergy! Missed opportunity but still good research.
  • Return to the starter is again weak - there is some excellent content to this lesson but the start and end could be much more memorable.
  • Under time - you could've used a clip or something else to make more of an impact

WWW.  The humour in the starter is used nicely.
The presentation was shared around well. Channels and brands were commercialised well.
Point regarding  MTV awards was great.

EBI. Could've included a video
Use of Key words e.g Synergy
         Better starter and plenary

3 still images

The props of the spear and shield connote war and bloodshed. This shows the audience that this film is an action film. Also, the low-key lighting on the man's face connotes that he's a mysterious character. The colours of red and black further connotes war and bloodshed which really implicates the genre of action. The costume of just a cape set the time period of the Romans as the cape was really fashionable back then. The facial expression of the protagonist grimacing also indicates the idea of war and bloodshed. As there is a character positioned in front of everyone else, I can tell that he is the leader also the protagonist.

The setting in this sill image is unknown. This is because the background seems to be blurred out and the focus of the camera is on the man. The prop of the necklace or amulet create enigma codes as it makes the audience generate question like, what is it and what does it do so it creates a sense of mystery. The lighting in this still image is low-key which further creates a sense of mystery as we, as the audience, start questioning this character and whereabouts. The turquoise green colour hair could show the reader that this character is far from normal as the implication of green hair is an eccentric individual. The facial expression of the character seems to be worry and anxiety. This could also mean that there is a binary opposition. By him holding the necklace in the way he is, it shows how it important. By the necklace being positioned sort of in the middle of the image, it further signifies that it is important.

The setting of them seeming to be in a basement could show that they're hiding. This creates questions within the audience because the setting they're in is ambiguous. The props of the maps behind them and exotic drawings show that they are away from home, that they're in an unfamiliar environment. The high-key lighting shows that they're in the day and possibly the action is resolving as the sun is out which can suggest things are getting better. The dull-grey colour of the jacket connotes that the character was previously hiding and had been somewhere else as his attire doesn't seem to match the sunny weather. The grazes on the dude's face hints that he had previously been fighting. This could show that this film is an action film. However, by the positioning of the boy and girl facing each other and being fairly close, it connotes that they are in a relationship which means that this film is a hybrid between romance and action. The expression of the two characters' face, looking into each others eyes, also show implicates that that they're in a relationship.

Advert Analysis - 50 Cent

The colour scheme of the advert is dark dull colours like black, grey and khaki green. These colours connote sadness and depression which is weird for a sports brand. However, the colours could connote seriousness and focus. This idea of seriousness and focus is also seen in the pose of 50 cent. The advert composes of two images. A medium close-up shot of 50 cent and a picture of fingerprints being recorded. The medium close-up shot is effective in this case as it shows the seriousness in his face to the audience. The low-key lighting brings about a mystery in 50 cent. This could show how the brand 'RbK' can produce surprises in the design of their trainers or something special in the clothing line. This could create a sense of expectancy within the market. The setting that 50 cent is in is unknown, this further creates a sense of mystery. This makes this advert very ambiguous. The image of the fingerprints appeal to the youth as the fingerprints connote crime, trouble and rebelling. This could appeal to the youth as to them, the life of crime and mischief could be seen as desirable. The font of 'i am what i am' is in an old font. This could mean that he's been the way he his since back then, and he isn't going to change. This connotes that the brand will stick to their product design and keep it classic and even when everything else has changed, they'll keep their design.

The preferred reading for this particular advert is RBK is a brand that is edgy and controversial. This allows the brand to be desirable to the youth as the ideas of crime and trouble which are edgy and controversial, may appeal to them. However, this advert could be interpreted in a negative way. The ideas of crime on the advert could bring a negative publicity to RBK. Moreover, 50 Cent's quote of 'take advantage of today' connote carnage, havoc and destruction. This reading could also be called as oppositional reading.

Key notes.

Mise-en-scene. French for 'what's in the scene' Tells audience essential details.

5 Elements of Mise-en-scene: 1. Settings/Props 2. Costume/ Hair/ Make-up 3. Facial expression/ Body language 4. Lighting/ Colour 5. Position of characters/ objects in the frame

1. Settings are able create an expectation within the audience.

2. Costumes are able to tell the audience what time the film is set. Can also build an initial judgement of an individual.

3. The facial expression of a character can tell us the emotion of the character. Can also show a state of relationship between two characters.

4. Positioning is used to show relationship between people.

5. Lighting could be used to either highlight or to hide certain objects or people in the scene. It can also be used to show a characters mental state.

Types of Lighting

Low-key lighting: Uses only key and back lights. Can show contrast between light and dark. Creates deep shadows and silhouettes.

High-key lighting: Filter lights used. Looks more realistic. Creates bight sets or a sunny day.

Facial Expression task.

Image 1: The emotion created here is love and passion. This is because people kissing connote love. The meaning of kissing is showing physical affection towards someone you love.

Image 2: The facial expression of this character connotes pain and anger. His eyes highlight the anger and pain he is probably feeling.

Positioning

Image 1: This image shows that the state of this couples relationship isn't good at the moment. I can tell because the man and women are sat on opposite ends of the sofa. This shows that they aren't at good terms.

Image 2: This image shows that the two characters are in a team. I can tell because both characters are stood together which shows they are on the same side.

LAST TASK

Image 1: The costumes used by the character show that it is set in the pirate era. The lighting in this shot is low. This creates a mystery within the reader, enigma code. By the lighting seeming to be from candles, it shows that its from the olden times. The facial expression of the characters show worry and fear. By them physically being on their knees, show that their desperate. By the flooring being cobble, it shows that the setting is far from a desirable place.

Image 2: The costumes used by the characters are what pirates would wear. This shows that the film is based around pirates. The lighting also seems to be low which is showing mystery. Also by the setting being a bit misty, it creates an atmosphere of uneasiness. The facial of the characters seem to be of aggression which shows that action is about to happen, action code. The props of treasure show that there will be a fight between two parties for the treasure which also works as an action code.

Image 3: The costumes used by the characters are what pirates would wear. The facial expression of the pirates show that they are listening with intent, almost like planning an attack or planning a route to the treasure, action code. The setting of it being on sea, shows that the pirates are close to their destination as they are talking probably about a plan of attack. The high-key lightning shows that it is day. By the Pirates being close together it shows that they are in a team as they all seem to be on the same terms.

Advert Analysis- Nike(personal choice)

This Nike advert paints Ronaldo a shade of silver which likens him to some sort of statue or a famous memorial. I think that the use of this colour silver is illustrating to the market that he is a legend. This appeals to people as it is connoting that legends wear Nike and it is almost saying that Nike creates legends because of the quality of their products. The signature pose of Ronaldo about to take a free-kick further shows that it is him. This encourages consumers to buy Nike because if Ronaldo is wearing Nike, they also would want to wear Nike. Also, the tense body language of the men in the wall contrasts to the calm and collected pose of Ronaldo also connotes that Nike gives you power and authority which is a positive idea which will encourage consumers to invest in Nike. The lighting seems and the focus seems to be on Ronaldo which shows that he is the subject matter. This allows the audience to quickly recognise that it is Ronaldo so people would want to check out the new line of apparel or footwear Nike has out. The composition of the photo is interesting because Ronaldo is on one side of the photo and the wall is on the other side. This connotes that Nike sets you out from the crowd. That if your're wearing Nike, you're better and more empowered as in the photo, Ronaldo has one whole side of the photo to himself. The setting of this picture is obviously on a football pitch. This means that this Nike poster is intended for the football players and people who are interested in football attire.

Film advert of my choice

Transformers: Age of Extinction
What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be? I think that this film has two different parties fighting for a common prize, there is are binary oppositions. By the setting of the characters seen behind them shows that they have been through a lot of difficulty to gain that prize. I think that the protagonist is the character with the gun in his hand right beneath Optimus Prime's sword. I think this because there is a light coming from behind his head which shows that he is the bringer of hope and victory. By Optimus Prime being the largest character there, it is like he is the protector of the characters. By all the characters stood under him it is anomalous to how a bird has its chicks under his wing.
Genre? This film is part of a franchise that is infamously known for its special effects and action. Furthermore, the action code of futuristic firearms being held also connote action is bound to happen. I also think that this film belongs to a hybrid genre of sci-fi and action. Science fiction because of the robot and the name of the franchise, 'Transformers'.
Audience? I think that this film is targeted to the younger generation of males. This is because the hybrid-genre of science fiction and action appeal mainly to the male audience. This film carries all the conventions of an action film for example, the guns and the destruction in the background. So this really catches the attention of the males.

Film Poster Analysis

Film Poster Analysis

Blade Runner

1. What do you think the film is about and what might the story line be?  This film may be about a man fighting for survival as the he may have something that everyone wants.

2. What genre do you think this film belongs to? I think that this films falls under the genre of action because there is a man holding a gun. This film could also be sci-fi because of the futuristic looking building.

3. Who do you think is the target audience? I think this film is targeted 80% male and 20% female. This is because the genres of sci-fi and action portrayed on the poster mainly appeal to the male audience.

Scary Movie 2

1. What do you think the film is about and what might the story line be? I think this movie could be about a group of friends in a haunted cinema running away from a serial killer. This film revolves around the killer and how he kills his victims.

2. What genre do you think this film belongs to? I think this film is a thriller because of the title being a 'Scary movie'. Also by the 7 characters seen on the poster not looking too serious, it can suggest that it can be under comedy too.

3. Who do you think is the target audience? I think this film is targeted equally between male and female but aimed towards the older audience being 18-30 years old. This is because the women on the poster could hint the film not being appropriate for children.

Uzak

1. What do you think the film is about and what might the story line be? This film could be about a young man that is released form prison and now has to deal with people who have held grudges against him.

2. What genre do you think this film belongs to? This film definitely falls under the genre of mystery because on the poster there is a figure looking at something that the audience cant tell. Furthermore, there are little clues on the poster as the title, 'Uzak' doesn't give any clues nor does the image. This film could also be a thriller because the figure on the poster looks sinister. Also, the background of the city and the pollution in the sky could also show that there's something more to find out.

3. Who do you think is the target audience? I think that the target audience for this film is equally both male and female as the genre of mystery appeals to both genders. But the film is mainly aimed towards people between 16-30 years old because the mystery doesn't really appeal to the younger ages.

I'm not scared

1. What do you think the film is about and what might the story line be? This film could be about a boy who finds a mysterious hole in his back garden in the house he had just moved in to. In the hole, its where his fears lurk. In order to get out he need to face his fears and not be scared. The contrast between the blue sky and the dark hole he is looking into suggests that what he is looking at is not good at all.

2. What genre do you think this film belongs to? I think this film is a horror. This is because the title suggests that there will be something scary. Also, the concerned expression on the boy's face suggests that its a horror too.

3. Who do you think is the target audience? The target audience for this film are 60%male and 40% female. This is because horror films appeal slightly more to males than women. This film is also aimed particularly to the age group 18+.

Description: Sin City (2005) PosterSin City
1.      What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be? I think that this film is about a group of people who protect their city from extra-terrestrial creatures. Their aim though the film is to exterminate all these creatures including the most tough and scary creature.
2.      What genre(s) do you think this film belongs to? I think that this film is an action thriller. This is because majority of the characters shown are holding guns. And the hint of the film being a thriller comes from colour scheme of the poster being monochrom colours. However, the title is in blood red showing how there will be blood shed which further shows the film is an action.
3.      Who do you think is the target audince? I think that the target audience is 70% male and 30% female. This is because the genres of action and thriller mainly appeal to the male gender. This film is also probably aimed towards people who are between 16-30 years old because of the image seems to appeal to the more modern viewers.

Description: http://tamilgun.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Largest-box-office-hits-Pirates-of-the-Caribbean-Dead-Mans-Chest.jpgPirates of the Caribbean – Dead man’s chest
1.      What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be? I think that this story is about a race between two pirates and their crews to find the ‘Dead man’s chest’. Both pirates battle it out to see who finds the chest and claims the treasure.
2.      What genre(s) do you think this film belongs to? I think that this film falls under the genre of aciton and adventure. This is because both pirates have to find the location of the treasure which is adventrous whilst seeing who could get there first which is the ation.
3.       Who do you think is the target audince? The target audince for this film is 70% male and 30% female. This is because the story of pirates mainly appeal to the male gender because of the violence and their lack of hygine. This film is aimed towards 12-30 year olds because the story of pirates appeal to the younger generation.

Description: http://doridrohd.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/aishwaryaraibrideandpre.jpgBride and Prejudice
1.       What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be? I think that this film is about a couple’s journey on how they get their parents to approve of their marriage. This turns out to be a struggle for them because the bride’s parents don’t approve of the groom because of their social prejudices.
2.      What genre(s) do you think this film belongs to? I think that this film is a romantic film because on the poster there is a man and woman and im assuming that the story revolves around their relationship.
3.      Who do you think is the target audince? The target audince for this film is 95% women 5% men. I am pressuming these figures because romtaic films are aimed mainly to the women.

Description: http://oscarmovs.com/mdb.jpgMillion Dollar Baby
1.
What do you think the film is about and what might the storyline be? I think this film is about a girl who had been growing up in an orphanage and was adopted by a kick-boxing coach. In the story, it shows her growth in the ultimate fighting league. She gets better and better and ends up to be the number 1 in the world. I assumed that the plot would be something with sports because the woman’s attire seems to be something an athlete would wear. (hair tied back and a vest)
2.      What genre(s) do you think this film belongs to? I think that this film is a sports as well as a drama. This is because the facial expressions on the faces of the characters shown seem to be gloomy which made me assume that this film could be a drama.

3.       i Who do you think is the target audince? I think that this film is 60% male and 40% female. This is because even if its sports with the sub-genre of drama, it appeals to women. I assume that the protagonist is the woman because the other two characters on the poster are looking in her direction and by the protagonist being a woman, it appeals to the women. This film is aimed to 12+ because some scences in this film could be violent as im assuming she is a kick-boxer.
