EBI: Use paragraphs. Go back with a red pen and highlight using '//'. Consider props for Question 1 - Add a paragraph.

Learner Response: The props used in this scene all create a sense of crime. Props used such as the gun and dead bodies are effective in presenting the characters to be untrustworthy as they are seen as criminals. This is because the connotation of guns are violence, crime and bloodshed. Additionally the dead bodies laying around the floor also connote crime and violence which present the characters as evil and criminals. Furthermore, the props of the guns, dead bodies and the cigarettes are all iconography of gangster, crime genre.

Re-written
The costumes of the characters were black overcoats. This suggests that these characters are sinister because the connotations of black overcoats are crime and evil. Furthermore, the dark colours could also act as a visual representation of the dark and sinister character that they are. Also the dark colours suggest a mystery which creates an anticipation. Also, by the costumes of the characters the audience could tell that the characters weren't in the same side through the different costumes which tell the audience that there is some sort of binary opposition of the film.

The props used in this scene all create a sense of crime.

The lighting used in this scene was low-key lighting. This creates a mystery surrounding these two characters seen because the implications of the low-key lighting is that they're involved in criminal behaviour. In addition, as the lighting used is low, it suggests that what these characters are doing is meant to be kept secret which shows that these characters are untrustworthy. Also the low-key lighting is a typical convention of crime and gangster films, and as this scene is the introduction it foreshadows the bloodshed bound to happen through the film.

Initially, the setting of the scene is unknown and ambiguous which further creates tension and mystery surrounding both characters seen. A feeling of untrustworthiness is also created amongst these characters as the setting seems to be on a dock, very secluded. Furthermore, as the time of day is evening, it also creates feelings of untrustworthiness as the secluded setting and the late time of day connotes that whatever their business is, it is to be kept secret. Also, it could suggest that these two characters could possibly be involved in criminal activity; this then results in the characters being mysterious.

The facial expression of the character seen generates enigma codes as his gazed eyes and exhausted expression all make the audience wonder as to what he could have possibly been doing. However, the audience could conclude that he is a protagonist and that he is the heroic figure in the plot fighting off the villain. However, it can also be said that he is a weak character and insignificant character in the plot through the way he presents himself. Additionally, the facial expression of the other character in the scene was unseen which further adds to the mystery. Also, it could imply that he is hiding something and also shows he's untrustworthy.

Dependency Theory

1) What do YOU primarily use the media for: entertainment or information?

Personally, I primarily use the media for entertainment such as YouTube and movies, however from time to time I do use the media for information and to update myself with the current affairs. I also use the media as a form of communication.

2) To what extent do you feel we are dependent on the media?

I feel that people are really dependent on the media as it is a big part of modern culture. Through the advancing of technology, it is a social norm to have a smartphone and thus people can access all the sorts of media with ease. Furthermore, media such as television often act as a background in people's homes which shows that media is a really strong part in people's lives. Lastly, the way people are updated with the happenings around the world is predominantly through the media with forms such as the newspaper, news-websites and news-programmes.

3) Has our dependence on the media changed over the last 10 years? How?

I strongly believe that our dependence on the media has increased in the last 10 years and this is because of technology. As smartphones have become increasingly popular, it allows people to access media very easily and through time, people have included surfing the internet and checking their social networks into their daily routine which increases their dependence on the media.

Two step flow model

Opinion leaders pass on their own interpretations in addition to the actual media content. Opinion leaders are influential in getting people to change their attitudes and behaviours. So the opinion leaders' interpretation influence people's own interpretation and how they will react to that media.

This YouTuber fits into the two step flow model because as he has many subscribers and views on his videos, he can influence other people on what games are worth buying, as his content is on gaming. Furthermore, his opinion on games can either discourage or encourage people to play that game as he is seen to know what he's talking about because of the amount of subscribers he has.

The influential tweeters fit into the two step flow model because they essentially are opinion leaders so what they tweet influence the public into how they should react and interpret certain media. Furthermore, their opinion and their interpretation of media would influence how others influence the media too.

Uses and Gratifications

People watch this film to escape their routine and be entertained. This is because this film is a fiction film so people can escape the reality. Furthermore this film could be used to escape from problems because of its entertainment factor.

Personal Relationship:

Facebook can allow people to interact with other people and allow people to build a personal relationship. Also, this social networking site can bring people together as people can develop an affection for each other.

Personal Identity:

People with an interest of rock music use Kerrang magazine to see themselves reflected on the media. Additionally, they can further widen their knowledge about rock which is personal identity.

Surveillance:

People use the guardian newspaper to catch up and update themselves about what's happening worldwide.

Psychographics – Aspires

Psychographics – Aspires

The psychographic group Shivum and I are researching are the aspirer's.
Our couple's names are Tim and Ruby.

They’re currently studying graphic design at Kings College London.

They enjoy going shopping at designer outlets.

They also take part in creative programmes in their university.

Ruby enjoys reading Vogue Magazine as they want to keep up with the latest trends. Tim reads GQ magazine also to keep updated with men’s fashion.

They also like channels that air content more suited for the more younger audience – 18-30. The group this couple are in are filled mostly by young adults, so television channels like MTV would be most ideal for them as it is targeted for youngsters.

They own the latest gadgets like the Iphone 6. The group aspirers are all about having a good public image. So even if investing in all the latest gadgets would be unfavourable, they would want to acquire that latest device in order to look modern.
