You don’t need to convert your background into a layer.Choose Layer→New Adjustment Layer. From the submenu, choose your desired adjustment. In the New Layer dialoge box, name the layer (if you want), leave the other options at their defaults, and click OK. You can also just click the Create a New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel and choose an adjustment from the drop-down panel that appears. The dialoge box pertaining to your adjustment appears in the Adjustments panel. The adjustment layer also appears in the Layers panel. The adjustment layer icon and a thumbnail appear on the adjustment layer. Press Ctrl+J or open Layer menu and select Duplicate to duplicate the layer. Do this once more so that you have two layers. Now, rename the top layer to “High Pass” and the middle layer to “Low Pass”. As you may have guessed, on the High Pass layer, we’ll be applying a high pass filter and on the Low Pass layer, we’ll be applying a low pass filter. Lets work on the Low Pass layer first. In the Layers palette, click on the eye beside the High Pass layer to hide the layer and select the Low Pass layer that we will be working on.

Music video

How is it typical of a music video?
  • This is a typical music video because it has the artist's, Plan B, performance. The artist seen in this music video appears to perform in an unusual setting which in this case is in a parking lot. This means that his performance is lip-synced which is also common in music video. This music video includes the idea of spectacle. This is seen as the artist is looking directly at the viewer. This is called direct address. Also this music video use inter-textuality which in this case is with the news about the London Riots. As this genre of music is considered as grime, the overarching theme throughout this music video is street life and gang culture.

How does it represent the London riots/rioters?
  • This music video gives a dominant representation of the London rioters with the few alternative views regarding police brutality. This is through the footage of the youth smashing shop windows, looting televisions and other merchandise, setting fire to cars and having brawls with the police. This shows that the London rioters were all involved with gang culture. However, the weaponry that the police had against the rioters were belittling the rioters. This is because the riot squad had a full armour, a shield and a baton. This represents that the police units against the rioters were more powerful in a way which undervalues the strength of the rioters. The London riots were presented in this music video as devastating and destructive. This a dominant representation as the riots had devastating affects and also encouraged the media to build a negative image of the youth.

What audience pleasures does it offer
  • Personally I can't answer the question because this music doesn't appeal to me. However to youth on the street would like this music as it talks about gang culture on a level that is intimate to the youth.
How does the music video help to promote the film?
  • This music video helped promote the film because some of the stars of the film were seen in the video. This is really subtle way of promoting the film. Also the tile of the track is also the same title as the movie. This then allows the film to gain some publicity and some sort of exposure as they share same title.

RECORD COMPANIES
The film Ill Manors was written as a "hip hop musical for the twenty-first century", incorporating elements of both crime drama and music video sequences. Plan B had always intended to narrate the film with a different song for each the six stories, however some songs were written later, such as "Ill Manors".
Speaking about the album in an interview, Drew stated, "You could call it bass line, soul, with a bit of hip hop. The album has the lyrical depth of my first record but the musical composition is light years ahead, as it's informed by everything I've learnt in the last five years – writing, producing and playing with a live band. In an NME magazine interview with Drew he stated: "Deepest Shame" was first written as a hip hop song entitled "Michelle" that was used in his short film Michelle. The version of "Michelle" that was used in Ill Manors has some similar things to "Deepest Shame", however for the album release the song was re-written as more of a soul number.

SALES
On 8 February 2012, it was announced the album would be released on 7 May via Atlantic Records. Shortly after, the album's lead single, Ill Manors, premiered. The deluxe version of the album includes a bonus disc of the original film score for Ill Manors with music composed by Plan B and the iTunes deluxe edition also includes two remixes of "Lost My Way" as bonus tracks. The official studio version of "Lost My Way" received its first play on BBC Radio 1 on 23 May 2012. It was made available in the form of a lyric video via YouTube later that evening. On 13 June 2012, Drew performed a live session in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, which for a special occasion, was held at the Maida Vale Studios. Labrinth commented "It's like a dungeon, but maybe it works with the whole Ill Manors concept!" The event featured several guest appearances, including Labrinth, Etta Bond, John Cooper Clarke and Kano.

1) How popular is BBC Radio 1? Find average listening figures for the station. How has the BBC Radio 1 audience declined over recent years? Why might this have happened?
2) Who is the target audience for BBC Radio 1?
3) How does Plan B promote Ill Manors in this interview?
4) What representation of Plan B can we find in this interview?

1. The average number of listeners are 11 million. The figures are declining because the use of the internet, namely YouTube, is what is generally used to hear interviews or listen to music. Also the decline of listeners are due to other stations taking the spotlight. Radio stations such as Radio 2 and Radio 4.

2. The target audience would be young people, 17-30. This is because this station features majority modern artists from the music industry. The psychographic group of mainstreamers. This is because the people featured in this radio station are usually mainstream, influential pop artists.

3. Included the release date which makes listeners aware of when the film is going to be screened. Also, by Plan B showing his dedication in editing and directing the film causes anticipation because he presents himself as working tirelessly to finish the film to the best of his ability so listeners would want to see whether all his hard work has paid off.

4. Plan B is represented as caring for where he was originally brought up as he was saying how the Olympic park has brought new attention to the East End of London. Also he is represented to have a heart for young people. This is as he was talking on how he employed youth from in and around the local area to star in his film. He added that he hopes that starring in his film would open doors of opportunity for them in the future.

1) What is the history of the Jonathan Ross show? What channels has it appeared on? Why has Jonathan Ross been a controversial media figure in the past?
2) Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.
3) What is the audience appeal for a programme like the Jonathan Ross show?
4) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?

1. The Jonathan Ross show was first broadcasted on September 3rd 2011 on Itv after his pervious series Friday Night with Jonathan Ross was stopped in July 2010. During 2013, the amount of views of this chat show declined as audiences enjoyed the atmosphere of The Graham Norton Show instead and also claiming the chat show had a poor selection of guests.

2. The target audience for this programme would be more middle aged, working class people the demographic A,B,C1. This is because Jonathan Ross has gained a reputation for being a chat host for many years and is even regarded by ITV as "the king of talk shows". As he has been in the industry for many years, it would appeal to the audience that are older as they have followed him through his early years to the present.

3. The audience appeal of this show is that there are usually a whole bunch of celebrities that have been in the spotlight of the media, whether starring in a new film or releasing a new album. This show appeals to people who want to keep up with what is new in the media as well those who are fans of the stars guesting at the chat show on that episode.

4. Plan B's brand is represented here because he talks about his ideologies about the youth needing support and compassion. Also, as he was performing on the show later on, Plan B, as a musician is shown as he is going to perform one of the tracks that is newly released.

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?
2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?
3) What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?
4) Does the film successfully do what director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to achieve? Explain your answer with reference to both the film and the making of documentary.

From this documentary we are able to say that the intention of the creation of this film is to express the reality of the life of youth in the East End of London. This gives insight to the struggles modern day youth face. This is also an honest interpretation of the side of life that is often ignored. This shows how there is a genuine need for change. Also, it is to show the audience between how life was before and life like now. Shows the shift in the quality of life before and now. In a way this production was to raise awareness about how the youth are being ignored and being outcasts in society that they are resulting in criminal behaviour.

We learn that the some of the actors used weren't actors by profession but people that are living in that situation around the local area. This meant that the acting was genuine as the cast were acting from the experience of actually living in that situation. Also, it gave the film a more genuine feel as the actors aren't staging the way that they talk or faking their personality but are portraying their honest self. Also the location of the scenes were shot live and not in a studio. This further enhances the realism of the film as it captures the actual locations of the East End. This is all down to a low budget.

The target audience of this short documentary are the audience that are able create change. So this would be the people who have prejudices towards the youth and council bred kids. This is because it shows the hardship they deal with and what they result doing because of the lack of resources and support from the government. Initially, the audience would be the rioters however people who are of higher class should be interested in this film according to this documentary because it gives insight to their standard of life.

This film successfully arouses emotion and points of discussion and successfully encourages viewers to re-evaluate how they perceive modern day youth. Emotion is evoked from the audience because of how harsh the plot is to the characters. Furthermore the bleak sense of reality evokes sympathy as audiences relate the film to real life. Discussion is created through Plan B's choice of casting unprofessional actors sparks debate as having an unknown cast is considered unorthodox.

1) What is SBTV? Research the channel and explain how it became successful.
Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.
2) What is the audience appeal for an interview like this? How does the opening of the clip emphasise this appeal?
3) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?

The demographics for this YouTube channel would be mainstreamers because this channel is regarded as trendy and something that is somewhat fashionable. This means that mainstreamers would be interested as this group of people consume media that is consumed by most other people thus the demographic name deriving from the word mainstream. Also C1,C2,D will be interested as they are commonly the younger audience.

The appeal for this interview is that it is an exclusive interview. This is emphasised in the beginning when the host was hiding and sneaking into the studio. This encourages and appeals to the audience because people would want to gain exclusive information.

Plan B's reputation is represented in this text because he is appearing in a YouTube channel that is predominantly watched by young people. This means that his reputation of being trendy and appealing to younger audiences is reinforced with his appearance on this channel, SBTV.

500 WORDS

Life of today’s youth
Today’s youth face pressures from all areas of life; they face a constant struggle that, without the right guidance, they can face fatal consequences. Peer pressure, achieving good grades and fitting in are some of the many challenges the youth of today face. Personally, the biggest hardship that modern fay youth face is peer pressure and the longing to fit in with what’s trendy. The youth that are considered as trendy are those wearing the latest fashion trends and those that are amongst those in the street. For majority of youth, this isn’t what they regard as ‘cool’. What then do they do? On top of pressures from school, fitting in and making friends is just as difficult.

Resisting temptation from bad influences sounds simple but in reality is a huge ordeal for a 16 year old who wants to fit in. To overcome this, finding their identity is what they do. Exploring what they are interested in, what they’re passionate about as well as having an aspiration to what sort of person they want to be in the future. This may take time but it is worth it. After this, finding people who share the same interests can be a way that they could even improve and enhance their ability in what they’re passionate about, whether it may be football, music or even dance. After all, iron sharpens iron. Finding friends that challenge and inspire can really be a way in brightening their future.

In modern life, finding excuses is easy. But for those who are determined and are motivated in achieving having no excuses is the first step to take. Getting things done and not being lazy ensures things are completed it, things being homework, coursework or house chores. Building this habit of being proactive is an essential trait for everyday life and so developing that habit now, whilst we are young, can lead us into having a brighter future. Having the mind-set of no excuses sets you up for success and I whole heartedly believe this.

Achieving success is what everyone dreams but only those who are willing to sacrifice time and effort are the only ones who achieve true success. Showing initiative and going out to find opportunity is essential. On top of getting good grades, actually getting work experience in the field of work they are interested in can aid develop skills and show whether that job is for them. Going out and finding experience also puts them in a healthy environment where they can grow and enhance their ability.

Live life to the fullest is a phrase that is said commonly but isn’t practiced as commonly. This doesn’t mean to go out and be reckless. This is encouragement for the youth to strive for their personal ideal life. The misunderstanding that success is measured in how big the salary is what holds today’s youth from living life to the fullest. So living out something that you genuinely enjoy and that are passionate about is what life to the fullest it.
